Renew my Heart

About a year I go I was having Bible study in Panera with my youth group and we were learning and discussing Psalm 139:23-24. I was reminded that from a young age we have been told to follow our heart as if the heart is always truthful. For the longest time I believed that you can never go wrong with following your heart. I began to think about the times that "I was following my heart" when I had to decide the kind of people that I was going to hang out with or the kind of person I should be. But in reality it all comes down to letting God renew our mind and heart so that it can pleasing to Him. As humans we are not perfect and God sees beyond our limitations, therefore we cannot rely in our own understanding.
In Psalm 139:23-24 David is telling God to search his heart as in "testing his heart." Just like teachers test their students to see how much they know about a subject, David wanted God to search his heart to see if there was anything that was not pleasing. He wanted to have a pure heart that honored God. In Psalm 51:10 David is telling God to create a pure heart and to renew him. This means that we will have moments when we will fail God such as having a good attitude, forgiving those that offend us, and being obedient to His commands. Having a renewed heart is a daily process and it begins with having an open heart towards God. I encourage you to let God strengthen your weaknesses and ultimately letting God be your guidance. Do not follow your heart or go by your own understanding. God is faithful and he continues to speak to us daily.
